A construção da estrutura interna da Estàtua da Liberdade foi confiada a um grande técnico nesta àrea da época, o engenheiro Gustave Eiffel ou seja o famoso construtor da Torre Eiffel em Paris (do seu pròprio nome).
Considerada como um dos mais importantes monumentos da Nova Yorque e um dos mais simbòlicos dos Estados Unidos. O seu acesso ao pùblico foi proibido depois do atentado de 11 de setembro de 2001 por razões de segurança, nos ùltimos tempos foi reaberto ao pùblico mas com um certo contrôle, limitando o seu nùmero e autorização.
Diz-se que esta Estàtua “representa em geral a liberdade e a emancipação concernente à opressão”.
